WORTHINGTON - District 518 in collaboration with Southwest Minnesota State University and Minnesota West Community and Technical College will be hosting a workshop for educators focusing on cultural competency in education.
The workshop will take place on Monday and Tuesday at Worthington High School. Attendees include teachers, instructors and professors from District 518, SMSU and Minnesota West. Some of the topics scheduled to be discussed include building a positive learning environment,
fostering family involvement, and the benefits of knowing and understanding students’ cultural backgrounds. The workshop is expected to be helpful within the area given its cultural diversity. Funding for the workshop is provided by the Southwest Initiative Foundation and McKnight Foundation.
The program is part of an effort to expand the cultural competency of District 518 staff, and is a step in the goal toward growing and diversifying the teacher workforce. The program is intended to open doors toward establishing a teaching degree program in the Worthington area.
