BREWSTER — The Union Pacific Railroad continues to investigate the cause of a partial train derailment near the New Vision Cooperative fertilizer plant Saturday afternoon at Brewster.

According to a statement released by Kristen South, senior director of corporate communications and media relations for the railroad, 16 cars derailed in the incident, which was reported to local law enforcement at 2:45 p.m.

“The crew was not hurt,” South wrote in an initial email Sunday morning. “Union Pacific crews are working to clear the cars and make any repairs necessary.”

The tracks were cleared by Sunday evening, and South wrote in a follow-up email on Monday that the tracks reopened late Sunday night.

During the cleanup, South said a “minor amount of isooctane leaked from one of the cars,” and noted that remediation efforts were underway.
