LUVERNE — The Luverne community is mourning Brooke Thompson, 22, who died Tuesday morning in a four-vehicle crash near Brandon, S. D.

Thompson was a gifted figure skater and dancer, active with the Blue Mound Figure Skaters for most of her life.

She was a member of the dance team at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall while earning her degree in psychology. After graduating college in 2018, Thompson began coaching younger girls with the Blue Mound Figure Skaters. She had planned to begin graduate school at the University of South Dakota in the fall to pursue a master's degree in social work.

Her coaches and teammates admired not only Thompson's natural ability, but her inclusive efforts and team spirit.

"Brooke was one of the first people I met on the dance team at SMSU and she made me feel so comfortable on the team," said Emma Sandberg of New Hope, a teammate of Thompson.

As news of Thompson's death spread, hundreds of her peers and acquaintances posted social media comments remembering her bright smile and lauding her ambitious spirit.

Because Thompson lived on the ice, so to speak, the Blue Mound Figure Skaters had a gathering at the ice rink Wednesday night to share memories and grieve together. Thompson loved organizing get-togethers, so the event was seen as an ideal way to honor her memory.

Another effort underway is a GoFundMe page set up in Thompson's honor. Funds will support a scholarship for the Blue Mound Figure Skaters to empower future skaters. The fundraiser has a goal of $5,000, and as of Friday afternoon had reached $3,970.

Thompson's visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Luverne. Funeral Mass will be 2 p.m. Monday at St. Catherine Catholic Church, with an additional hour of visitation prior to the service.
