UPDATED 4:21 p.m.: Saturday morning rollover claims life of 20-year-old Heron Lake man

OKABENA — A one-vehicle rollover early Saturday morning in Jackson County claimed the life of a Heron Lake man.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a one-vehicle rollover at 5:44 a.m. May 11 in Rost Township.

According to the initial investigation, a 2001 Chevy Silverado pickup driven by Mic Ostgaard, 19, of Brewster, was northbound on Jackson County 9 just north of Interstate 90 when it entered into the west ditch and rolled. The vehicle’s passenger, Wyatt Henkels, 20, of Heron Lake was fatally injured.

As of Monday afternoon, Ostgaard was being held in the Jackson County Jail. He appeared in court on Monday and was formally charged with two offenses: criminal vehicular homicide - operate vehicle with negligence - under influence of alcohol; and criminal vehicular homicide - operate vehicle with alcohol concentration .08 or more. Bail was set at $5,000 with conditions or $40,000 without. 

The investigation remains ongoing, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office stated Monday afternoon.

The Lakefield Ambulance, Okabena Fire Department, Lakefield Police Department and Minnesota State Patrol assisted at the scene.

According to Henkel’s obituary, a visitation will be held Wednesday evening and Thursday morning with burial to follow Thursday.

A memorial at the crash site has been erected.
