WORTHINGTON -- Dr. Bassel Bardan, a pediatrician with Avera Worthington Specialty Clinics, was named the Doctor of the Year during the sixth annual Doctor's Day celebration Thursday at Worthington Regional Hospital.
The criteria for the award spell out DOCTOR: Develops relationships: Offers leadership and availability; Communicates well; Treats skillfully and compassionately; Observes policies; Respects staff.
Bardan has practiced in Worthington for almost 11 years. He and his wife, Monika, live in Worthington and have one son, Nazir, 16.
Nominations for Doctor of the Year were solicited from WRH staff. Excerpts from the nominations for Bardan were read by WRH Director of Nursing JoAnn Nyholm:
"Makes his patients feel very special and can remember details about them before he sees a chart."

"Communicates well; very clear regarding what an illness may be and what we (as patients and family) need to do.
"Very compassionate and understanding -- great for patients and families."
"... Doctors need to do charts in a timely manner, and he always gets his done on time."
"Always nice to staff when questions are asked and treats all questions as important; never rude or demeaning."
Bardan attended the celebration for a short time and accepted the plaque from WRH Chief Executive Officer Mel Platt before heading back to the clinic to attend to his waiting patients.
"I truly love my job and my family. They are both my passion," Bardan said. "I am privileged to work in this community. My fellow employees are such wonderful people with high morals and great work ethics. They make my job fun and easy. Thank you to the WRH staff for this award."
All the physicians who practice at WRH were presented with corsages in honor of Doctor's Day, and the staff was treated to a celebratory brunch.
"We are so fortunate at WRH to have so many fine physicians, and we enjoy this opportunity to demonstrate our appreciation to you," said Nyholm. "Throughout the year, you give of yourselves, night and day, for your patients, families and in response to our staff."
