With Feb. 27 through March 3 being National School Board Appreciation Week, we, the members of the Prairie Elementary Parent Group, wish to publicly express our gratitude to the District 518 Board of Education.

School board members put in a lot of time on behalf of the students and staff in this district, wrestling with tough issues such as budget balancing and policy making.

Sure, there's some prestige that comes with being a school board member, but there are an awful lot of headaches and issues to deal with, too. Plus, school board members know that for every constituent who approves of the decisions they make, there may be two (or more) others who think they should have done something else. That's all part of being an elected official, but we are still grateful for their collective commitment to public education and for helping our district educate local children in the best way possible.

So this week in particular, but also throughout the year, we say thanks to Lori Dudley, Steve Schnieder, Lowell Nystrom, Linden Olson, Joel Lorenz, Joel Wiltrout and Bob Jirele for their willingness to be public servants, and advocates for public education.
