BREWSTER -- The Brewster Fire Department was awarded $157,403 in the latest round of funding from the Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters grant program.

The funds will be used to purchase a 2,000-gallon tender (tanker) truck, according to Brewster Fire Chief John Garmer. Bids are now being taken for the vehicle, which Garmer hopes to have in the department's fleet within the next six months.

"Fire departments and first responders are critical to the well-being of our communities," said Sen. Amy Klobuchar in a press release announcing the grants. "These funds will provide our emergency personnel with the important resources they need to ensure the safety of Minnesotans."

"Over $2 million will be put to work across Minnesota to keep our communities safe. Minnesota's fire departments need tools, training, vehicles and operational resources," said Sen. Al Franken.

Brewster was among 11 Minnesota communities to share in $2.26 million in federal grant dollars for fire departments.
