PRIMGHAR, Iowa -- David Johannsen, the Sutherland police chief, has pleaded not guilty to charges of second- and third-degree theft and conspiracy to commit a felony.

Johannsen stands accused of being involved in hog thefts from Liberty Properties Inc. on six occasions and unlawfully selling a water heater purchased in Orange City. He is on unpaid leave from his position as chief and could face up to 12 years in prison if found guilty.
