WORTHINGTON -- While the start of the Christmas season is still four months away, the community improvement committee of the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce is hoping residents will get into the giving spirit of the holidays.
The committee is in need of funding to replace Christmas banners that have adorned Humiston Avenue for the past 15 holiday seasons. The banners are weathered and worn, and without the money to buy new, they are in danger of not being replaced.
"We've repaired and repainted the ones that are up there now," said committee member Brenda Hurlbut. "They are just in dire need of replacement."
Committee members have been counting on funds from the Chamber-sponsored can crib, which sits in the Runnings parking lot, to help pay for the banners. However, since that money is also used to purchase live garland and replace Christmas lighting and decorations throughout town, additional funds are needed.
Individuals are encouraged to contribute toward the purchase of a banner or fund one or more of them, Hurlbut said. Donations may be sent to the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce.

"We're definitely encouraging the can crib," Hurlbut said, adding that the crib will be going through the King Turkey Day parade in September to collect cans and gain publicity for the fund-raiser. In addition to the banners, money is needed to replace many of the brackets used for displaying the banners.
As for the new banners, Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Darlene Macklin said they will be red in color and feature white snowflakes with the words, Happy Holidays.
Macklin said the design is such that the banners can remain displayed through the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year holidays. If the needed funding is received, the banners will be up in time for this Christmas season.
