BREWSTER -- Officials with the Union Pacific Railroad have determined the cause of a Feb. 27 train derailment northeast of Brewster.
Mark Davis, UP spokesperson, said a broken rail caused the 23-car derailment.
"The engineering team have sent the parts to a lab to determine what had caused the break -- a metal defect or an issue with the forming of the rail as examples," Davis wrote in an email response to the Daily Globe.
Davis said finding the cause of the derailment helps UP in their efforts in reducing them.
