Channel surfing on the big screen

WORTHINGTON -- Sunday evening, the nine Worthington Girl Scout troops want the public to get out of the house and away from their televisions to come watch TV with them.

WORTHINGTON -- Sunday evening, the nine Worthington Girl Scout troops want the public to get out of the house and away from their televisions to come watch TV with them.

The Scouts will present their dinner theater debut, "Channel Surfing," Sunday at the First United Methodist Church in Worthington. Doors open at 5 p.m. with serving of a pork chop and baked potato dinner, and the show to start at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are available in advance at McCarthy's Floral in Worthington. They can be purchased between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. today and between 8 a.m. and noon on Saturday.

Sunday's performance corresponds with Girl Scout Week, said troop leader Michelle Cummings.

"It's kind of the recognition of Girl Scouts," added another troop leader, Teri Reller.

Worthington is home to nearly 40 Girl Scouts, ranging from the young Daisy troop to the senior scouts, and nearly all of them play a role in the dinner theater production and will help serve the meal.

The "Channel Surfing" script was adapted for the local performance by Brandon Caster, who also directs the cast with Cindy Teerink.

The set includes a giant-sized television and "a typical teenage girl's bedroom," said Caster. "(The girls) are supposed to be doing homework, but they're watching TV instead ... they're channel surfing."

Throughout the production, the girls flip through such TV channels as the Bad Monster Movie network, Psycho Psychic network, Game Show network, Teen Magazine Junkies and the News Report network. There are also a couple of public service announcements mixed in.

Girl Scout troops began practicing for the performance a couple of months ago, but it wasn't until late February that all of the troops came together to put the script together. Since then, they've been practicing a couple of times each week.

While the production is a fundraiser for the Girl Scouts, several guys are also involved. Four high school students helped work on the set and will portray some of the roles in the presentation, and Chris Cummings and Jim Hanson are the official cooks for the meal.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Juliette Low World Friendship Fund. Low is the founder of the Girl Scout organization. Her World Friendship Fund was established in 1927, the year Low died, to honor her dream of spreading Girl Scouting around the world. The fund supports programs that foster international friendships among Girl Scouts from 145 nations.

Cummings said her troop had wanted to do a fundraiser for the fund ever since they visited the birthplace of Low in Savannah, Ga., last year.

Julie Buntjer became editor of The Globe in July 2021, after working as a beat reporter at the Worthington newspaper since December 2003. She has a bachelor's degree in agriculture journalism from South Dakota State University.
