In response to Ms. Marki's Jan. 25 letter to the editor, I have a few thoughts. Telling a lie under oath is very illegal. I believe that would be called perjury. And yes, there are laws in some states that do make adultery illegal. But the larger point of the whole matter is what it says about character.

If a person has to be dragged into a courtroom and made to testify under oath, will they tell the truth? Or will they do what is the least unpleasant and hope they don't get caught? If we have laws to regulate everything, those laws can be slanted in favor of who is writing them. I think it's best that the laws be as clear and brief as possible, as to let people have the most freedom they can have without trampling on the rights of others.

As to religion, if they have to tell you they are a Christian, and you can't see it by how they live their lives, I really doubt Christianity has much influence on their lives.
