WORTHINGTON - The city of Worthington is preparing to make its own repairs to the Thompson Hotel, a 39-unit apartment building in downtown Worthington considered blighted by police and city officials, along with some of its own residents.
Worthington City Council members on Monday gave city staff authority to prepare documentation that would legally establish the building as hazardous. At its April 9 meeting, the council is expected to authorize repairs to the building.
If the property owner gives the city consent, the city will hire people to make repairs as soon as possible. If the owner does not, the city will declare the building as hazardous and get a court order to make repairs - a longer process.
Either way, the cost of the cleanup will be levied onto the property owner through special assessments, which can be paid back in five or fewer annual installments at eight percent interest.
