WORTHINGTON -- Consolidated Construction Co. Inc., in conjunction with the city of Worthington, will host a groundbreaking of the new Worthington Event Center and Comfort Suites Hotel on Monday.

A 30-minute ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. at 1477 Prairie Drive, Worthington. In the event of rain, the ceremony will take place inside the Biotechnology Advancement Center, 1527 Prairie Drive.

The event center and hotel project is a unified effort between the city of Worthington and Lexington Hotel Development Group to bring banquet and convention facilities to the city. While the city will own the event center, the hotel will remain under private ownership. A single operating entity, Lighthouse Hospitality Group, will operate both the hotel and event center.

The project is situated on a highly visible site with easy access to Interstate 90 and U.S. 59. The Worthington Event Center will feature 14,000 square feet of total space with pre-function areas and a 500-seat main banquet room. The main banquet room is divisible into three smaller rooms for more intimate functions.

The Comfort Suites, by Choice Hotels International, will feature three floors and 75 guest rooms in nearly 50,000 square feet of space. This is a new prototype model for Choice that redesigns the exterior of the building to be more economical to construct while improving on property aesthetics and modernizing the appearance. The savings achieved on the exterior design allow for more luxurious furnishings and property features to enhance the guest experience.

Construction is scheduled to be complete in the summer of 2013. Both the hotel and event center will begin accepting reservations in early 2013.

Mayor Alan Oberloh, members of the Worthington City Council, ambassadors of the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce, representatives of Choice Hotels, the architect, construction manager and local contractors involved with the project are expected to be in attendance.
