WORTHINGTON — Charges were filed earlier this week against a Worthington man accused of choking a woman that impaired her ability to breathe.

Angel F. Mercado-Molina, 23, faces two counts of domestic assault. The felony strangulation charge is punishable up to not more than three years or a fine up to $5,000.

The charges are related to a June 14 assault that alleges Mercado-Molina took the victim's phone and had one hand around her neck while he read through text messages on her phone with his other hand. The assault impaired her ability to breathe, she told law enforcement. She was able to break free and call 9-1-1 from a neighboring residence.

According to the complaint, Mercado-Molina told law enforcement that he and the victim had gotten in an argument but denied it was physical.

His conditional bail was scheduled at $5,000 and unconditional at $20,000. A court-ordered Domestic Abuse No Contact Order prohibits Mercado-Molina from having contact with the victim.
