WORTHINGTON — A Brewster man faces charges related to two reported assaults of a Nobles County Jail inmate.

Joshua D. Rutgers, 35, faces two counts of misdemeanor fifth-degree assault, which is punishable up to 90 days in jail, a $1,000 fine or both.

According to court documents, on June 17, Rutgers entered another jail inmate's cell and hit him on the head while a corrections officer was administering medication to the inmate. Caught between the two, the corrections agent fell to the floor, the complaint states. Rutgers allegedly continued to hit the other inmate until another corrections officer tased him.

The victim reported that Rutgers had also hit him on the back the previous day. A red mark on the victim's back was photographed.

The victim reported that he and Rutgers had not gotten along at the jail. Surveillance footage corroborated what the victim had said, the complaint notes.

Rutgers has a pending case in Nobles County District Court that accuses him of making terroristic threats, domestic assault and a controlled substance crime.
