Former Worthington man wanted in car theft case
WORTHINGTON — A complaint warrant was filed Monday in Nobles County District Court against a former Worthington man accused of stealing a motor vehicle upon moving out of his roommate’s home.
According to the complaint warrant, a Worthington man reported that his brother’s vehicle — which had been parked in his driveway — had been stolen in late August.
The complainant said his friend and former co-worker, Bereket T. Mekonnen, 24, may have taken it. He reported that Mekonnen had not responded to his repeated attempts to contact him.
On Sept. 10, the Sioux Falls Police Department reported that it had stopped Mekonnen while driving the stolen Toyota Avalon.
Mekonnen, of Sioux Falls, S.D., faces a felony charge of motor vehicle theft and a misdemeanor charge of tampering with a motor vehicle without owner permission. The felony-level offense is punishable up to not more than five years imprisonment, a $10,000 fine or both.
Because his whereabouts are unknown, a warrant has been issued.
