Hennepin County jail inmate escapes, quickly arrested

MINNEAPOLIS — The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office recaptured an inmate in Little Canada on Wednesday morning, Nov. 28, after he escaped custody from the county jail in downtown Minneapolis.

Michael Frank Simon, 57, was on the run for about three hours before being recaptured.

Sheriff’s officials say Simon escaped in his orange jail clothes about 7 a.m. Wednesday and was spotted on surveillance video running down the street.

He was being held for credit card fraud and also had a Minnesota Department of Corrections hold for burglary.

Simon was apprehended by the sheriff’s office with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service and several other local law enforcement agencies.

The sheriff’s office did not immediately explain how he escaped from the jail. However, WCCO-TV reported that he broke a window on the seventh floor while on a work detail.

The escape was the first in the history of the Hennepin County Adult Detention Center, which opened in 2001.
