A Slayton man was ordered to pay a $100 fine for a careless driving charge related to striking a man with his vehicle last January near Adrian.
According to court records, three other charges, including texting and driving, against Wesley Leysen, 19, were dismissed. He was convicted of careless driving, a petty misdemeanor.
In his plea agreement, Leysen stated that as he was driving south on Nobles County 15, he observed a vehicle facing his direction with its headlights on bright. He claimed he didn’t immediately realize the vehicle was in the same lane of traffic he was traveling, and when he did, he took evasive action by turning into the ditch on the right side. He then struck the victim, who was reportedly out looking for cattle that had gotten out.
The victim was airlifted to Sioux Falls, S.D. and survived.
