WORTHINGTON — A Sioux Falls, South Dakota man arrested Tuesday faces a string of charges after being discovered driving a stolen motor vehicle in Nobles County.
Shukri A. Jara, 31, has been charged with possession of stolen property and fifth-degree drug possession, both felonies; gross misdemeanor introduction of contraband into jail; misdemeanor driving after license suspension and possession of an open bottle; and possession of drug paraphernalia, a petty misdemeanor.
The charges relate to a Nov. 5 traffic stop by a Nobles County deputy of a vehicle that had been reportedly driving at a high rate of speed. The Subaru vehicle was confirmed stolen from Sioux Falls.
A search of the vehicle yielded the discovery of a pipe with a white residue that tested positive for methamphetamine. A fast food restaurant cup appeared to contain an alcoholic beverage that spilled over the passenger side of the vehicle, the complaint states.
While being booked into the Nobles County Jail, a cut red straw with a white substance that tested positive for meth was located in Jara's jacket.
Jara's conditional bail was scheduled at $5,000; his unconditional at $20,000. If convicted of either felony charge, Jara faces a maximum punishment of five years in prison, a $10,000 fine or both.
