BREWSTER — A tip from Nobles County Community Services resulted in the arrest of a local man who is the father of a child with a girl between the ages of 13 and 16.

According to the victim, Rene Miranda, 19, of Brewster, is her "husband," and they have been together for about a year. She reportedly stated that she feels safe with Miranda and is not afraid of him.

In an interview with law enforcement, Miranda said that the two have been living together for a while. He also allegedly knew that it was illegal for him to have a sexual relationship with a person under 16, but that they love each other and that all of their sexual contact has been consensual.

Miranda was charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct and third-degree criminal sexual conduct. The first-degree charge carries a maximum possible sentence of 30 years in prison and/or a $40,000 fine. If he's convicted, Miranda will be sentenced based on criminal history.

He was not arrested, but served a summons to appear in court next week, where he will face the charges. Because he was never booked into jail, Miranda does not have a mugshot.
