SIBLEY, Iowa - Today marks the beginning of the Osceola County Fair, which will continue through Saturday.

The fair will start with a splash - today’s 4-H events include a magician, barbecue cookout and fashion revue. The following days will give 4-H and FFA members an opportunity to showcase their talents, knowledge and experience.
Many of the 4-H and FFA members are involved in the livestock project. The Osceola County 4-H Youth Coordinator Mike Compton said the county fair is a great opportunity for learning and gaining experience.
“(It is) a learning experience that consists of actual shows where they show their animals,” Compton said.
Categories in which 4-H members participate are beef, horse, swine, sheep, dog, goat and dairy. (Due to the avian flu, the poultry category has been removed this year.)
The students will bring their animals into a show ring. A judge will then rank them on the following criteria:

  • how well the animal is groomed;
  • how well the 4-Her works with their animal; and
  • how much knowledge the 4-Her posses.

Apart from showcasing their talents, every 4-H club makes a bulletin inspired by the year’s theme. This year’s theme is “Dare to Discover.” Iowa State University Extension will also bring its conservation station to the fair. This station specifically targets water quality. College students will be teaching youths the importance of clean water and healthy soil by using their rainfall simulator. They will be at the county fair from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday.
“There’s something fun for everyone,” Compton said. “We just invite people to come and check out the 4-H building.”
