BREWSTER -- Though she grew up around her mother's hair salon, Emily Schmitz did not decide she wanted to be a cosmetologist until about three weeks before she graduated high school.
"I was going to go to school for graphic design," Schmitz remembered. "Then I decided to do hair."
Emily's decision came as a surprise to her mother, Ann Schmitz, who has owned and operated a hair salon for 22 years. Ann's salon is connected to her house, where she raised all of her children.
Emily graduated in 2002 from Model College of Hair Design in St. Cloud and then worked for several years in Sioux Falls, S.D., and Worthington. Now, she has joined her mom at Choice Cut salon, near Brewster.
"I still like doing hair after 27 years," Ann said. "I started the same way as her in Worthington and then when I started my family I decided I wanted to do it at my house."

The two are looking forward to working together at the salon, located about six miles from Worthington and just one mile off Minnesota 60.
"I was ready for a change," Emily said. "I am really excited to be able to spend more time over here and see my family more often."
Emily will offer hair cuts, prom and wedding styles, perms, colors, waxing, pedicures and manicures at her new location.
Manicures and pedicures had not been offered at Choice Cut in the past. But, Emily enjoys doing them.
"People are more apt to pamper themselves now then they were when I came out of beauty school," Ann said.
Ann works on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Emily has not set scheduled hours yet. She is going to see how her first month goes.
"I want to be flexible and see what works for my clients the best," she said.
The mother-daughter duo did update some of the décor in the salon.
