Mahnomen County Sheriff's Deputy Christopher Dewey is making physical and mental improvements during his ongoing rehab and may be released as soon as May 6 from a specialty hospital here, his doctors said today.
In the first information released about Dewey since he was admitted March 5 to Craig Hospital here, a facility specializing in brain and spinal cord injuries, doctors said Dewey is participating in the interdisciplinary Traumatic Brain Injury Treatment Program.

However, Dewey continues to struggle with nausea, headaches and pain, which his treatment team is working on, the hospital said in a news release.
The rehabilitation program also includes training and counseling for Dewey's wife, Emily, including learning about brain injuries.

Hospital officials said Dewey is expected to remain at Craig in inpatient rehabilitation until about May 6.
Dewey was shot in the head and abdomen Feb. 18 in Mahnomen, Minn.
Two men have been charged in connection with the incident, which led to a roughly nine-hour standoff.
