Globe News Brief jpg

OKOBOJI, Iowa — The public is invited to learn all about the fun traditions surrounding the Winter Solstice during the Jingle Bell Walk and Winter Solstice Celebration Dec. 18 during Family Nature Night outside the Dickinson County Nature Center and around Kenue Park.

There are two time slots available, at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., with a limit of 30 people per time slot.

The event begins with a walk, with jingle bells handed out to the children. The association of jingle bells with the Winter Solstice will be explained on the walk and then a story, “The Shortest Day” by Laura Sulentich Fredrickson, will be read around a fire.

Jingle bells and many of the other traditions commonly associated with Christmas were common in European winter solstice celebrations.

Family Nature Night lasts approximately 45 minutes and is free to the public. Please pre-register for one of the time slots by calling (712) 336-6352.
