WORTHINGTON -- A fire caused some smoke and water damage on Saturday afternoon at a single family residence located at 1214 Seventh Ave. The Worthington Fire Department was dispatched to the scene at 1:13 p.m. Saturday.

According to Worthington Fire Chief Rick Von Holdt, the fire was detected and extinguished before it could do significant damage.

"Somebody was upstairs and smelled smoke, so they got out of there right away," said Von Holdt. "We got on top of it right away, but there was some smoke damage, but not much fire damage."

The fire was located in an upstairs bedroom that was currently unoccupied, although some children had reportedly been playing in the room the previous day. The door to the room was partially closed, effectively containing the blaze to the room. But Von Holdt noted that a nearby window would have soon provided fuel for the flames if it hadn't been detected so quickly.

The firefighters had the fire contained within 15 to 20 minutes and remained on the scene for about an hour, according to Von Holdt. The cause was undetermined.

"It did burn up a bed spring and mattress on the floor," he noted. "But I could not say it was electrical or anything like that. ... There was an outlet right by the mattress and box spring, but we couldn't find any burned wire or anything."
