The Lake Superior School District board is looking at going to a four-day school week in the future. It could save the district $250,000, Superintendent Phil Minkkinen told the school board last week. He said the cost of running the schools is going up and enrollments have been unstable.
Class time would be increased for each day to equal the hours currently kept at schools. Minkkinen said the change could take place next year. It would have to be decided on by April 1, he said, the date the school calendar is usually set by.
Other school districts in the region have considered the four-day schedule, including Duluth. The district in Blackduck has implemented it.
The idea blossomed in the state last year as districts dealt with less state aid and a faltering economy.
