NEW RICHMOND, Wis. - It was a quiet Friday afternoon in New Richmond when the call to the St. Croix County Emergency Communication Center came in from a local resident.
A family of ducks had wandered too near a storm sewer grate and nine babies had fallen inside.
After the incident, the mama duck, understandably upset, waddled nervously nearby quacking her displeasure. But alas, there was nothing she could do.
New Richmond Police Officer Gayle Freiseis was the first on the scene. She called the city's street department for help.
The crew showed up minutes later with the necessary tools to recsue the wayward ducklings.

With a borrowed pail in hand, Street Department employee Ross Fellinger swept the ducklings up and pulled them out.
The contents of the pail was placed in a nearby yard, where the ducklings were reunited with their mother.
