School districts across this nation have been observing American Education Week since Monday. With the week wrapping up Saturday, we feel it's a good opportunity to reflect on how important a good education -- and clearly, one received in our backyard -- can be.

A review of a few stories published in the Daily Globe this week alone offers a good sampling of the several positives taking place in our schools.

On Tuesday, a feature on District 518's use of technology in its classrooms detailed how students and teachers alike are enjoying and learning with such tools as iPod touches and SMART boards.

And on Wednesday, we published a report on the success and popularity of District 518's arts and music programs .

Not to ignore communities outside of Worthington, Thursday's Daily Globe included a story on renewable energy projects taking place in Windom Area High School and Westbrook-Walnut Grove Secondary School through their participation in Youth Energy Summit (YES!). And students in Adrian (see today's edition) hosted a Great American Smokeout event Thursday, additional proof that positive initiatives of many kinds can originate from today's students -- our leaders of tomorrow.

Of course, all of those folks who are employed in our schools -- teachers, of course, but everyone else, too -- do their part each day to promote both academic and non-academic success. Today, in recognition of this week, we salute them.
