Okabena teen earns national honors

OKABENA -- Michelle Olsen of Okabena, a senior at Southwest Star Concept, was named a state winner of a National Honor Society scholarship from the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Only 53 students nationwide were awarded the $1,500 scholarship and more than 6,000 applied.

Ecology Bus offers candling program

LAKEFIELD -- The Prairie Ecology Bus will offer "A-Candling We Will Go" for kids eight years old and older and adults, who will learn to dip their own candles, from 10 to 11 a.m. June 10.

Fleming earns scholarship

WAVERLY, Iowa -- Kyle Fleming, son of Pamela and Kevin Fleming, will receive a merit-based scholarship to attend Wartburg College, Waverly.

Luitjens recognized

STORM LAKE, Iowa -- Katie Luitjens of Worthington was recently inducted into the Alpha Chi Honor Scholarship Society at Buena Vista University.

Membership to the society is limited to the top 10 percent of the senior class and the top 5 percent of the junior class.

Luitjens also received the Harold Walter Siebens School of Business Senior of the Year Award for International Business and Marketing.

MSU scholarship given to local teen

MANKATO -- Travis Pedersen, son of Gerald and Geralda Pedersen, Worthington, was recently named recipient of a $4,000 Maverick Scholarship from Minnesota State University, Mankato, for the 2008-2009 school year.

The scholarship is awarded to students demonstrating outstanding academic achievement.

accepted to NCC

SHELDON, Iowa -- Travis Ailts of Rushmore was recently accepted to Northwest Iowa Community College, Sheldon, where he will study industrial and commercial wiring beginning in fall 2008. Brandon Colby of Brewster was also accepted to NCC, where he will study heavy equipment beginning in fall 2009.

Hoffman wins awards

CROOKSTON -- Scott Hoffman of Wilmont received the Horticulture Club Service Award, the Dale Knotek Community Service Award and the Student Achievement Award at the annual awards ceremony at the University of Minnesota, Crookston.

honored graduate

LINCOLN, Neb. -- John Woodring of Worthington was recently named an honored graduate of Southeast Community College, Lincoln.Woodring graduated in the professional truck driver training field.

Saufley honored

SUPERIOR, Wis. -- Justin Saufley of Worthington was honored for academic achievements in the business program at University of Wisconsin, Superior.

He was presented with the Business and Economics Scholarship and a DBE Scholarship Award. Saufley is majoring in business administration with an emphasis in marketing.

Jansen earns

SDSU scholarship

BROOKINGS, S.D. -- Tarryn Jansen, son of Jerry and Sharon Jansen of Worthington, was awarded the College of Pharmacy Phonathon Scholarship for the 2008-2009 school year at South Dakota State University.

Jansen is a senior pharmacy major at SDSU and a 2005 graduate of Worthington High School.

BIGELOW -- Worthington Area Language Academy recently received a $300 donation from Swift and Co. for its after-school programs.

West instructor to

attend workshop

WORTHINGTON -- Anne Aby, Minnesota West Community and Technical College history and political science instructor, was recently accepted to attend the 2008 Organization of American Historians Community College Workshop May 29-31 at Ivy Tech College, Bloomington, Ind.

The Community College Workshop includes plenary-style panels and group sessions focused on seven core subjects related to teaching the U.S. history survey course, regional issues and hands-on curriculum development.

MARSHALL -- Natali Ramirez, daughter of Jaime and Gloria Sigala of Worthington, was selected to receive a Heritage Student Scholarship to attend Southwest Minnesota State University, Marshall, for the 2008-2009 school year.

ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- Levi Morgan of Lake Park, Iowa, a junior history major at Northwestern College, Orange City, recently presented a paper, "Maus and Persepolis" at the Student History Conference at the University of South Dakota, Vermillion.

Weitgenant earns scholarship

WORTHINGTON -- Jessica Weitgenant of Worthington will receive an $800 scholarship from the District No. 6 Foundation of Kiwanis International, on behalf of the Kiwanis Club of Golden K of Worthington.
