Local teacher 'makes science matter'

WORTHINGTON -- Judy Heitkamp, a fourth-grade teacher at Prairie Elementary School, was among seven winners honored with a 2010 NSTA/Vernier Technology Award at an earlier awards banquet in Philadelphia.

Heitkamp will use Vernier data-collection technology with her students to study how humans can affect the quality of the water supply in their community. She also was awarded $1,000 in Vernier products and $1,000 to use in the classroom.

Scholarships to be awarded

WORTHINGTON -- In celebration of National Neighbor Works ® week June 7-11, the Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership, with partners Minnesota Energy Resources, JBS, Doug Nau Construction and Randall Bjork, has created a scholarship program for residents in the SWMHP service area.

The scholarship award ceremony will be 7 p.m. Monday at the Nobles County Integration Collaborative, 117 11th Ave.

The following students will receive scholarships: Susana Murillo, Sameera Nalla, Yunuen Velazquez, Ricky Thonglyvong and Alison Synavone, all of Worthington.

Peters accepted to NCC

WORTHINGTON -- Jeremy Peters, Worthington, has been accepted as a student at Northwest Iowa Community College, Sheldon, Iowa.

He will begin study in the collision repair and refinishing program in fall 2010.

Area students admitted to SMSU

MARSHALL -- Crystal Severance, Rushmore; and Timothy E. Nunes, Bigelow, have been admitted to Southwest Minnesota State University for the fall 2010 semester.

Severance, daughter of Dale and Lisa Severance, plans to study art.

Nunes, son of Shari Nelson, plans to study psychology.
