WASHINGTON - The Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested a man in South Florida for planning an attack against the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center, U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said in a statement Monday.
A law enforcement source said the man was arrested as part of a sting operation in which federal agents operate undercover.
The U.S. Attorney’s office in the Southern District of Florida said a man was taken into custody on Friday in a “national security-related arrest,” but there is no current threat to public safety.
The suspect, whose identity has not yet been publicly disclosed, will appear before a magistrate judge in Miami at 2:00 p.m., said Sarah Schall, spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney.
Wasserman Schultz said she was grateful that the suspect was arrested “before he was allegedly able to do harm to the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center and its congregants, so many of whom are my constituents, who were observing the end of Passover.”
