WILMONT — A Wilmont business suffered extensive damage following a Tuesday afternoon fire that is still under investigation.

Wilmont Oil Co., located in the community on Fourth Avenue, is co-owned by brothers Dustin and Jeffrey Larson, who purchased the business a little more than five years ago. The fire was initially reported at 12:51 p.m. Tuesday.

“My brother and I come to Worthington to eat dinner every day or go pick up parts,” Jeffrey said. “We got a call from the city clerk, Rita Vaske, who said the gas station was on fire, so we hurried back.”

Jeffrey said firefighters were able to determine “a small spot” where the fire had started, but not the cause. Nobody was at the business at the time the fire began, he added.

It’s unsure at this point when Wilmont Oil will be back in business. An insurance representative visited the scene Thursday, Jeffrey said, and a building inspector will likely arrive sometime next week.

“We’re thinking that getting up and going by the first of November or the first of December would be pretty lucky,” he said.
