WORTHINGTON - The public is invited to attend a flag dedication ceremony at 5:07 p.m. Wednesday in front of the new Avera Medical Group Worthington building along Ryan’s Road.
Organized by local veteran Simon Koster, the American flag will be raised during a program that includes veterans, police officers and firefighters.
Koster approached the clinic earlier this summer, asking if it would be interested in flying the American flag. Working with the clinic’s spirit committee, six weeks were spent fundraising in order to have enough money for the flag and a telescoping flag pole.
“The flag dedication, I wanted to have it on 9-11,” Koster said. “We’re going to have a couple firemen, police and veterans there representing the different things that went on at (the 9-11-2001 terrorist attack).”
A light for the display was donated by ECHO Lighting of Worthington, and local electrician Brad Sieve donated his time to install the lighting.
“We’re going to have the police officers install the telescoping flag pole,” Koster said, adding that a trio of local veterans will put the flag on the pole, and local firefighters will raise the flag.
“There was a lot that went on on 9-11. We want to honor the firemen, the police and the veterans who have given their lives.”
Koster said there’s no significance with scheduling the flag dedication for 5:07 p.m., other than to “make people curious and want to come.”
