Flood warning issued for Des Moines River in Jackson, other regional waterways

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The National Weather Service has issued flood warnings for:

The Des Moines River at Jackson, from Sunday evening to Tuesday afternoon. At 10 p.m. Saturday the stage was 9.7 feet. Minor flooding is forecast. Flood stage is 12.0 feet. The river is expected to rise above flood stage by 10 p.m. Sunday and crest near 12.2 feet by Monday, falling below flood stage by the end of Monday. At stages near 12 feet, lowland flooding in rural areas begins on non-leveed portions of the river.

The Little Sioux River at Spencer, Iowa, until further notice. At 8 a.m. Saturday the stage was 8.5 feet. Minor flooding is forecast. Flood stage is 10.0 feet. The river will likely rise above flood stage by 8 p.m. Saturday and crest near 13.3 feet by Monday. At stages near 14 feet, city sewers in Spencer can begin to back up. Highway 18 between Spencer and Dickens can start flooding if flows on the tributary creeks are also very high.

The Floyd River at Sheldon, Iowa, from Sunday afternoon to Tuesday morning. Flood stage is 12 feet. At near 14 feet, flooding affects large areas of farmland within 1,000 feet of the river.

The Big Sioux River at Sioux Falls North Cliff, from late tonight until further notice. At 10 p.m. the stage was 14.6 feet. Moderate flooding is forecast, and the flood stage is 16 feet. The river will likely rise above flood stage by 3 a.m. Sunday and crest near 17.4 feet by Sunday. At stages near 18.0 feet, significant amounts of rural land downstream of Sioux Falls, and the salvage yard in extreme eastern Sioux Falls will begin to flood.

9:45 p.m.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for Clay, Dickinson, eastern Lyon, O'Brien, Osceola and Sioux counties in Iowa, to expire at 12:30 a.m.

Radar indicated thunderstorms with very heavy rainfall across the warned area. Rainfall rates of up to 3 inches per hour may be possible with these storms.

Locations expected to experience flooding include Orange City, Spencer, Spirit Lake and Okoboji.

9:21 p.m.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for northwestern Cherokee, southwestern O'Brien, northeastern Plymouth and southern Sioux counties in Iowa, set to expire at 10 p.m.

At 9:11 p.m., meteorologists were tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing half-dollar sized hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 miles per hour. This storm was located near Maurice, or eight miles west of Orange City, and moving east at 30 miles per hour.

The storm will be near Orange City around 9:25 p.m., Alton around 9:30 p.m., Hospers around 9:40 p.m. and Granville around 9:45 p.m.

8:34 p.m.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for southern Lyon and Sioux counties in northwest Iowa and southeastern Lincoln and northeastern Union counties in southeast South Dakota, set to expire at 9:15 p.m.

At 8:28 p.m., meteorologists were tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing walnut-sized hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 miles per hour located near Alcester, or 8 miles northwest of Hawarden, and moving east at 35 miles per hour. Another storm was located near Rock Valley, moving northeast at 35 miles per hour.

The storms will be near Hudson and Fairview around 8:35 p.m., Ireton around 8:40 p.m., Rock Valley and Maurice around 8:50 p.m., Sioux Center around 8:55 p.m., Doon and Orange City around 9 p.m., Hull and Alton around 9:05 p.m., Boyden around 9:10 p.m., and Matlock and George around 9:15 p.m.

A tornado watch remains in effect for the warned area.

8:30 p.m.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for eastern Jackson County to expire at 9 p.m. tonight.

At 8:28 p.m., meteorologists were tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing quarter-sized hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 miles per hour. This storm was located near Jackson and moving southeast at 35 miles per hour. It will affect mainly rural areas of eastern Jackson County, including Alpha.

8:30 p.m.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for northwestern Clay and southwestern Dickinson counties in northwest Iowa and northern O'Brien and Osceola counties until 8:45 p.m. today.

At 8:17 p.m., meteorologists were tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado. This dangerous storm was located near Ocheyedan or 16 miles south of Worthington, and moving southeast at 25 miles per hour.

The storm will be near Sanborn around 8:25 p.m., Primghar around 8:35 p.m., Hartley around 8:40 p.m. and Milford around 8:45 p.m.

People in the area are advised to take cover now.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The National Weather Service has also issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Lyon and Sioux counties in Iowa and southeastern Lincoln and northeastern Union county in South Dakota until 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

At 8:05 p.m., the National Weather Service was tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing walnut-size hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 miles per hour. This storm was located near Heron Lake, 10 miles southwest of Windom, and moving southeast at 25 miles per hour.

The severe thunderstorm will be near Lakefield around 8:15 p.m. and Jackson and Bergen around 8:30 p.m.

The tornado watch for the area remains in effect.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for northern Osceola County and southern Nobles County until 8:15 p.m. today.
