"Fool's names, like fool's faces, are often seen in public places." This aphorism was a favorite of the nuns in grade school. I believe, however, that its wisdom is outweighed by the deadly importance of the secondhand smoke issue. So I am writing my first-ever public letter.
There is absolutely no doubt that any exposure to smoke in any route is harmful. I sympathize with the bar and restaurant owners who fear loss of income with bans on smoking in these businesses. However, the experience in Duluth, New York and other places has shown that this does not happen on the average. One cannot guarantee that this will be true for every individual establishment, but it guaranteed that secondhand smoke is injuring every worker and every customer.
The Freedom to Breathe Act now before the legislature is a realistic and very beneficial answer to this problem. I support it completely and encourage all who agree to contact their legislators.
