LENNOX, S.D. -- A 17-year-old Fulda High School senior and her unborn child were killed Saturday in a rear-end type accident near Lennox.
According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, Stacy Gunderman, 17, of Fulda, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
The accident occurred at 4:19 p.m. on Interstate 29 at mile post 59. Jeremy Goedtke, 18, of Fulda, was driving a Ford Ranger truck that rear-ended a Buick LeSabre. The highway patrol said Goedtke fell asleep at the wheel while going about 75 mph. He hit the back of the Buick that was going about 50 mph, pushing it into a guard rail. The driver of the car, Dale Nitch, 80, of Hawarden, Iowa, and his wife, Reba Nitch, 79, were both injured in the crash.
Everyone involved in the accident was transported to Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D. The highway patrol said Goedtke was released from the hospital. The Nitchs were still in the hospital as of Sunday afternoon.
