WORTHINGTON -- A somewhat unique surprise arrived in Dayle von Holdtt's mail last week.
It's not every day, after all, that gets a package containing a six-pack of beer. But there's more to the story than that.
Von Holdt, a U.S. Army veteran who served from 1952 to 1954 -- including a little more than a year in Korea -- received the surprise gift from son Craig, who retired from the U.S. Air Force in 2006 after 23 years of service. That father-son relationship, as well as the military connection they share, was uniquely represented on the six-pack.
Each bottle is labeled with the words "Dad, You're My Hero!" and "Veterans Day 2010," as well as a picture of father and son.
"That picture was taken in May 2007," Dayle said proudly. "Craig was the speaker at the Round Lake Legion service for Memorial Day."

The labels were custom-made by Beer on the Wall, which takes such orders online ( www.beeronthewall.com .). For a man who is a professed "life member of the Legion" -- as well as a beer connoisseur who says he enjoys about two per day ("that's my prescription," he said with a smile") -- the six-pack was a fitting gift that arrived just in time for Veteran's Day.
"He doesn't let me forget I'm a veteran," Dayle added.
Dayle and wife Twylla will be at Worthington's Prairie Elementary Thursday morning for a Veterans Day program. They'll then be in Round Lake for that community's program.
