Girls compete at Section 3A tournament

REDWOOD FALLS -- Area teams competed in the Section 3A girls' tennis tournament Thursday.

In the singles competition Worthington's Leigh Van Hove suffered a loss to Pipestone Area's Jesse Gergen 6-4, 6-1. St. James' Megan Flohrs then defeated Gergen 6-0, 6-0 in the second round.

Worthington's Sameera Nalla suffered a loss to Morgan Tholkes 6-1, 6-1.

Luverne's Autumn Wenzel lost to Avery Carlbom 6-0, 6-4.

Fellow Cardinal teammate Cathryn Hartz defeated River Valley's Jordan Rathman 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.

In the second round, Hartz lost to Montevideo's Shelly Monahan 7-5, 6-0.

"Cathryn really played well today," Luverne head coach Greg Antoine said. "She was able to place the ball and then get her opponent out of position and finish the point."

In doubles competition, Worthington's Annie Zaske and Lizzy Wetering lost to Montevideo's Emily Hein and Amanda Bertand 6-0, 6-0.

The Trojan duo of Jen Froderman and Ana Li suffered a defeat to Lac qui Parle Valley's Iva Schueller and Madolynn Morken 6-0, 6-1.

Luverne's Krista Van Dyk and Hilary Deragisch lost to Yellow Medicine East's Meghan Jensen and Jessica Erickson 6-3, 6-4.

The Cardinal pair of Kelby Robinson and Liz Solma defeated Karen Suter and Alexis Janssen of Martin County West 6-3, 6-2

In the second round, the St. James pair of Maja Johnson and Heather Nelson defeated Robinson and Solma 6-2, 6-2.

"Kelby and Liz played extremely well today," Antoine said. "They won the match they were supposed to win by playing aggressive and keeping the ball in play."
