Council rules Thompson unfit for residence
WORTHINGTON — The Worthington City Council voted Wednesday afternoon to tag the Thompson Hotel as unsuitable for residence.
The city will give current residents 90 days to vacate the premises, but the start date of the 90-day countdown is still unknown. Jason Brisson, the city’s director of community and economic development, said staff will have city attorneys make an evaluation before posting an official tag on the building.
Council members also voted 4-1 to continue the roof repair project on the Thompson (Larry Janssen was opposed). The action was an effort to remediate damage done to first-floor businesses as a result of the disrepair of the property. Members also felt that by not repairing the roof, they would be killing any chances of the building’s renovation.
Both council actions came following a tour of the Thompson, along with a discussion with members of the Worthington HRA board and representatives from the engineering firm Short Elliot Hendrickson.
