SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa -- The Dickinson County Endowment Fund has approved a grant of $15,000 for the Spirit Lake Protective Association's Mini-Wakan Committee.
Established in 2005, the Dickinson County Endowment Fund is a nonprofit foundation that supports projects and programs that improve the quality of life and promote a healthy economy in Dickinson County. The fund's resources come from private donations, gifts, bequests, and state gaming revenues. From 2005 to 2009 the DCEF distributed a total of $369,452 to 52 nonprofit organizations and agencies in Dickinson County.
"We are grateful to the DCEF's advisory board for their support of the Mini-Wakan project," said grant applicant Dave Murphy. "The grant of $5,600 in 2008 and this $15,000 grant bring us closer to the $1 million fundraising goal. The DCEF's grants will benefit the lakes area well into the future," he added.
Since 2007, the Spirit Lake Protective Association's Mini-Wakan Committee has organized the effort to raise $1 million to rebuild and renovate the Mini-Wakan shelterhouse east of the grade on the north side of Big Spirit Lake. Along with funding the refurbishing of the Mini-Wakan shelter, a portion of the $1 million raised will be used to provide an endowment to fund major repairs and replacements for both the Mini-Wakan shelter and Gull Point Lodge. To date, approximately $933,500 has been raised through grants, pledges and outright gifts.
An anonymous donor has issued a $120,000 matching gift challenge to supporters of the Mini-Wakan Project. All contributions received by Sept. 30 will be matched up to a total of $120,000.

"We are very close to the needed $1 million. I urge people who have not yet made a donation to 'SLPA-Mini-Wakan Shelter' to do so before September 30 so whatever amount they give will be doubled," said Joe Ulman, Chairman of the Spirit Lake Protective Association's Mini-Wakan Project.
