On behalf of the Southwestern Minnesota Habitat for Humanity Board, I would like to share a brief update with area residents about the Habitat work currently going in southwest Minnesota. Melissa Bentley has been selected as the homeowner for the 2006 Habitat Home that is currently being built on West Warren Street in Luverne. We welcome volunteers and donations toward this new construction. Chuck DeBoer is serving as the construction manager and volunteer coordinator for this project. Individuals interested in volunteering may call the Habitat office toll free at 1-866-220-6833.

Habitat for Humanity of Southwestern Minnesota was also pleased to accept a memorial donation from the family of Zona Quinn to provide a Habitat home in Pipestone. Through their generous contribution, Habitat has embarked on its first home renovation project. The renovations are nearly complete; the family selection committee is working on selecting a family; and a dedication ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Aug. 12 1at 710 Fifth St. SE. Area residents are invited to attend the ceremony and tour the home.

Fund-raising is an ongoing effort of the Habitat board. We are currently working to raise $25,000 to meet the needs for this year's projects. American Reformed Church in Worthington hosted a barbecue, salad and ice-cream dinner on Wednesday. Also, a pancake breakfast fund-raiser will be held in Pipestone from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Aug. 12 in the Harmon Playfleld Shelter. Please bring your family to these events and make a donation toward providing decent, affordable housing for people in need.

The local Habitat affiliate is seeking board members from Nobles, Rock, and Pipestone counties. Anyone interested in becoming a board member may talk to a current board member or call the Habitat office.

We appreciate area residents and organizations who partner with us through contribution of their time, talents and finances! We will try to keep you informed of our progress in the three-county area.
