Home and shop addition, new calf barn approved
WORTHINGTON -- The Nobles County Board of Adjustment approved three requests for landowners to vary from required setbacks to either construct new buildings or complete building additions during a Wednesday night meeting in Worthington.

Trey Davis, Worthington, was granted a request to vary from the required 135 feet from the center of the road to construct a 32- by 24-foot addition onto his home in the west half of the northeast quarter of Section 28, Elk Township. Davis said the addition will include the construction of three bedrooms in the basement, and a master bedroom, master bath and expansion of a living room on the main floor of the home.
Nobles County Environmental Services Director Wayne Smith said staff supports the request, and no comments were received from neighbors or township officials.
Davis also presented plans to complete a 24- by 24-foot addition onto an existing repair shop. The addition will consist of moving in a garage and creating a walkway to connect the two buildings.
“For the work I’m doing, I plan on putting a hoist in there for my vehicles,” Davis said, adding that the addition will provide for more storage for his business.
Nobles County Public Works Director Stephen Schnieder wrote a letter in opposition to the addition, saying the existing building is already too close to the road and creates issues with snow drifting during the winter months.
Davis said the existing shop is heated, and it is permitted for him to do commercial work.
“I understand that if a storm comes through and my buildings come down, I can’t rebuild (there),” Davis said.
Also approved was a request from Seth Darling, Worthington, to vary from the required 1,980-foot separation distance from a neighbor for the construction of a 488- by 70-foot calf barn on a 16.68-acre tract in the south half of the southwest quarter of Section 2, Indian Lake Township.
Darling purchased approximately four acres of farmland to construct the building. He wants to build on the north side of his driveway because the ground is higher, and the building would also be closest to an existing building where the calves are weaned. He will construct a 304- by 70-foot barn initially, with plans to add the remaining 184- by 70-foot space within five years. Once completed, the building will house 488 heifer calves.
Darling also appeared before the Nobles County Planning Commission later in the evening, where he received preliminary approval for a conditional use permit. The request will go before the Nobles County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday for final consideration.
Wednesday’s meetings were the final meetings for Nobles County Environmental Services Director Wayne Smith. He was thanked for his years of service to the county and for overseeing the county’s Board of Adjustment and Planning Commission meetings.
