Iowa inmate attempts suicide

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa -- An attempted suicide of an inmate occurred at the Dickinson County Jail Monday evening, according to a Dickinson County Sheriff's Office news release.

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa -- An attempted suicide of an inmate occurred at the Dickinson County Jail Monday evening, according to a Dickinson County Sheriff's Office news release.

Just before 7 p.m., a jailer discovered David Strang, 21, of Detroit, Mich., unresponsive in his cell. Life-saving measures were performed by jail staff, responding police officers and EMS personnel.

Strang was transported to Lakes Regional Healthcare and then life-flighted to Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D. No update on his condition was available Tuesday night.

Strang was awaiting trial and being held on a $10,000 bond for third-degree sexual abuse.

An investigation is being conducted by the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation. The Dickinson County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Spirit Lake Police Department, Spirit Lake First Responders and the Lakes Regional Healthcare Ambulance.
