WORTHINGTON -- The summer is quickly winding down with kids ready to return to school; well maybe the parents are ready for kids to return to school, at least at my house, a normal routine would be wonderful. District 518 would like to welcome all students back for the start of the 2006-2007 school year as well as parents, grandparents and the communities that are part of our district. We would like to encourage you to become active participants in the education of the district's students and help us continue to promote the importance of a quality education.
The new year brings many changes from the previous ones, for example, with a number of retirements and resignations. We have 20-plus new certified staff and about another 10 support staff (these are not new positions). This also brings new excitement to our district for often when change occurs, many people have the natural tendency of some apprehension and anticipation. I would like to assure you that we have an outstanding employee group that will allow us to enhance the great tradition of educating District 518 students.
It is normal for students to have some apprehension and anxiety when starting a new year. Kindergarteners have some natural anxiety since it is new to them, but they are not alone because the sixth-graders moving to the middle school will have those same feelings, and the ninth-graders moving to the high school may experience this as well. The district employees are here to assist them and provide encouragement, support and a quality education. We are all excited about the start of the year and have some changes that will be noticeable, while others may seem like an old hat. Come visit our buildings -- they look great!
Likewise, District 518 would like to stress the need to drive safe and watch for students starting on Sept. 5 at the middle school and high school. The elementary students will start class on Sept. 7, so please protect our children and drive safely.
Many of the extracurricular activities are in full swing. We encourage you to attend and be a part of these activities. If you would like to know when the activities occur, you may pick up a calendar at one of the buildings or the sponsoring businesses.

Also, we would like to thank all of you for the outstanding support in the past and the continued support for the upcoming school year. Let's all make this the best school year; one that is full of optimism, excitement, and pride for our communities.
