JACKSON - Volunteers added their GreenTouch to Kilen Woods State Park near Lakefield May 4.

Sponsored by Federated Rural Electric in Jackson, 17 volunteers and four park employees helped spruce up Kilen Woods. About 15 Touchstone Energy Cooperatives across the state helped promote a clean-up day at the state parks.

“It was a beautiful day to be outdoors enjoying the spring weather and making a difference at Kilen Woods State Park,” said Andrea Christoffer, Federated’s marketing and communications manager. “Volunteers picked up litter on trails, picked up downed branches in the campground from the ice storm, raked leaves at tent sites and the campground, pounded rebar back in on the parking spurs from the frost heaves, cleaned the office and park shelter, painted several posts, plus raked up leaves around the park shelter.”

“I’d like to thank Federated and all the volunteers who participated in GreenTouch,” added Jason Honkomp from Kilen Woods. “It shows that people care about our natural resources and Kilen Woods State Park. Federated and the volunteers help us get ready for the summer picnics, hiking and camping season, donating nearly 60 hours of work. It was especially helpful this year due to the late spring weather, and we have a record of nine weddings and family reunions scheduled for this summer at the park.”

The volunteers received a free hot dog lunch from Federated.

The GreenTouch program is a partnership between Minnesota’s Touchstone Energy cooperatives and the Minnesota State Park System. Electric cooperatives throughout the state also help fund the State Park guide. Over the last 19 years, GreenTouch has organized nearly 9,700 volunteers who donated more than 35,800 hours taking care of Minnesota’s State Parks.

Minnesota’s Touchstone Energy Cooperatives that participate in project GreenTouch are part of a group of rural electric cooperatives throughout the state. Touchstone Energy is a co-brand used by cooperatives all over the nation to market what local electric cooperatives stand for - integrity, accountability, community involvement and innovation.
