It's a good thing Paycheck and Ruby Begonia didn't race Monday in Worthington. A look at temperatures late in the afternoon showed the Turkey Capital of the World sitting at a temperature reading 10 degrees warmer than the fair city of Cuero, Texas. I think it's safe to say that with heat such as this, Ruby might have a bit of an edge ... but anything can happen in the great sport of turkey racing, right?
It's not supposed to be nearly as hot and Saturday - the forecast I saw Monday saw a projected high of just 64 degrees, with a 40 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms - but that doesn't mean they'll be some King Turkey Day heat. You'll find it at the Nobles County Fairgrounds, where competitors from all around will be competing in the Smokin' Gobbler Cook Off.
This event has become quite an addition to the KTD festivities, never mind a mouth-watering one. It's a great chance for folks who enjoy grilling everything from ribs to (gasp!) some of my fine-feathered friends to test their culinary skills against those who travel to various cook-offs such as this one. The event goes from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Of course, there's far more to tickle the taste buds than just barbecue. As has been the case since many generations of toms before me, the free pancake breakfast will be available Saturday morning. This year, it will be from 9 a.m. until noon in the fire station. There's also a brat feed and pork on a stick beginning at 10 a.m. at the VFW, a hot-turkey-on-bun meal at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church and the 11 a.m. opening of the food vendors.
All those culinary possibilities sound positively stuffing. Just don't go looking for this turkey to carve up to enjoy along with that stuffing.
