Lady Jays impressive, Bluejays bow out against Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Lady Jays took a four-point halftime lead and turned it into a rout as Minnesota West picked up its fourth MCCC South victory -- beating Minneapolis CTC, 90-71.

With the victory, the Lady Jays improve to 4-2 in the conference and 9-12 overall.

"We exploded five minutes into the second half," Minnesota West head coach Mike Fury said following the game. "We made some shots and some steals, and that was the ballgame.

"We played very well," Fury added. "We shot well and played defense well. And with their short bench, I think we tired them out at the end."

Freshman forward Jacinta Boever led the Lady Jays in scoring with 19 points -- hitting four 3-pointers in the contest. Sophomore post Katie Soderholm had a stellar game for MW, knocking down 17 points.

Stacy Bush and Rosie Lewis finished with 14 points apiece, while Brittney Williams dropped in 13 points. Minnesota West finished the game with 13 3-point baskets.

"In that second-half run, Jacinta and Katie hit some 3s, and Rosie had some steals and putbacks," Fury said. "From that point on, it was our game."

Lakita Davis had a game-high 29 points for the Marauders, followed by Brittany Johnson and Charmaine Cross with 19 and 18 points, respectively.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Despite outscoring the Marauders by 10 points in the second half, the Bluejays couldn't complete the comeback after trailing by 18 at halftime.

With the loss, the Bluejays fall to 3-4 in the MCCC South Division and 9-10 on the year.

Eddie Marrs led the Bluejays' efforts, scoring a team-high 16 points. Gordy Sanford finished with 10 points and eight rebounds for Minnesota West.

"We played well in the second half but couldn't make up for a poor first half," Minnesota West head coach Justin Heckenlaible said. "We managed to get it down to eight points in the second, but couldn't get any closer."
