WORTHINGTON — A special meeting of the Windom City Council has been announced for 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, with two action items on the agenda: the Board of Review, and a resolution that, if passed, requests $18 million from the State of Minnesota.

The resolution cites the potential shutdown of the HyLife Foods pork production plan as the reason for its request, following the April 11 notification that the plant will close in June if a buyer for the facility is not found.

“...a loss of 1,007 jobs within the community will have a devastating impact to the local economy, school district and countless families within the community and surrounding area,” the proposed resolution states.

Government officials, including state legislators, met with leaders from the City of Windom April 25 to discuss the issue, which is also cited in the $18 million request.

“These monies will be utilized, at the discretion of the City, for reducing wastewater treatment plant debt with the Minnesota Public Facilities Authority amounting to $6,500,000; $1,000,000 for transitional aid to the Windom Area School District and $10,500,000 for housing,” the proposed resolution states.
