WORTHINGTON — The Worthington City Council will consider several alternatives for the U.S. 59 turnback project — including possible roundabouts on Humiston Avenue at the Oxford Street and Ryan's Road intersections — during a special city council meeting planned at noon on Tuesday at Worthington City Hall.

Working with the city of Worthington and Nobles County, the Minnesota Department of Transportation has plans to reconstruct U.S. 59, from Interstate 90 to Minnesota 60. MnDOT has been in discussions with the governing bodies to complete a jurisdictional transfer or turn back of U.S. 59 to the city after construction.

On Tuesday, the council is set to discuss cost estimates and details of each alternative provided for the project.

The council will consider several potential configurations, including a divided four-lane on Humsiton Avenue, with roundabouts at both the Oxford Street and Ryan's Road intersections; or a roundabout at the Ryan's Road intersection and a signal light at the Oxford Street intersection. A divided two-lane along Humiston Avenue with signal lights at Oxford Street and a roundabout at the Ryan's Road intersection is also being considered. With the different options, the city is looking at a 2% to 4% estimated cost share.
